Telehealth Physiotherapy: It’s Great

by | 11 Feb 2024

Heads up, you’re about to step into the world of telehealth physiotherapy, and if you’re scratching your head thinking, “What’s this all about?” you’re in good company. Imagine ditching the drive and getting that expert physio advice from wherever you can pop open a laptop. We’re talking about bringing the physio experience into your living room, bedroom, or even your backyard—anywhere you can connect to Wi-Fi. This guide’s here to make sure you’re not just prepared, but also pumped for what’s coming.

Telehealth Physiotherapy: The What and Why

Telehealth physiotherapy involves receiving physiotherapy services over the phone or through video calls. At EmbdyHealth Physiotherapy, we conduct sessions using real-time video, so you can access treatment without leaving your home.

Telehealth physiotherapy allows us to diagnose and treat someone with the same high standards as in-person physiotherapy, but without the hassle of commuting, parking, or waiting. This means you can save time and money while still receiving top-quality care.

Additionally, telehealth physiotherapy allows individuals in rural or remote areas to access high-quality care, which may have been challenging before. This makes it easier for everyone to receive the treatment they need, regardless of their location.

How Can Telehealth Physiotherapy Benefit Me? Don’t You Need Physical Touch For Diagnosis and Treatment?

For most physiotherapy conditions, telehealth works just like regular in-person sessions. Wondering how? Let me explain. During the assessment, your physiotherapist gathers information about your condition by asking you questions. Based on your responses, they can often identify the likely injury or condition.

Advancements in online tools and techniques now allow for accurate assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of many conditions that previously required in-person visits. While some may wonder about the absence of hands-on techniques like massage, it’s important to note that while massage can provide short-term pain relief, it will not address the underlying cause of the injury. Instead, telehealth sessions focus on teaching you self-management techniques such as heat or ice therapy, self-massage, or mobilization exercises that you can easily perform at home. These techniques aim to reduce pain quickly and effectively, allowing more time to address the root cause of your injury.

After your session, your physiotherapist will provide you with a personalized exercise plan and other advice to help you continue your recovery at home.

This approach ensures that you feel better after each session while prioritizing long-term recovery and minimizing the need for frequent visits to the physiotherapist.

Getting Ready for Your First Telehealth Session: Essential Steps to Prepare

  • Session Link: Once you book your session with our physio, we’ll send you a link for your appointment time. No need to download any apps – simply click the link, and when your physio is ready, your session will start.
  • Setup: Choose a quiet room with a strong internet connection for your session.
  • Space: Make sure you have enough room to move around if needed. Your physio may ask you to walk, squat, or perform other movements to help with diagnosis and treatment.
  • Clothing: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. Depending on your pain area, consider wearing a singlet or loose shirt for shoulder pain, a loose shirt for back pain, or shorts for knee or hip pain.
  • By following these steps, you’ll be all set for a successful telehealth physio session!

Can I Use My Private Health Insurance or 5 Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) Visits for Physiotherapy?

  • Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) Visits: To access the 5 EPC visits provided by your doctor, you’ll need to visit your local GP and have a plan arranged. Your doctor will help you fill out the necessary form. Ensure they refer you to EmbdyHealth Physiotherapy for your sessions. We don’t charge any additional fees beyond what Medicare covers, as we understand the financial pressures you may face. At EmbdyHealth, we believe physiotherapy should be accessible to all, not just a luxury.
  • Private Health Insurance: Many health funds support telehealth physiotherapy, though not all. Below, we’ve listed those that do. Through telehealth, we’re able to offer excellent physiotherapy at affordable rates. Even if your health fund doesn’t currently cover telehealth, our prices are often lower compared to other practices even after the health fund has partially paid.
