5 Tips To Unlock Sciatica Relief

by | 9 Mar 2024

Understanding Sciatica: Causes and Symptoms Explained

Sciatica refers to pain, pins & needles, and/or numbness that starts in the lower back/buttock area and may travel down the back of the leg, occasionally going all the way to the foot. It happens due to irritation of the sciatic nerve, a long nerve running from the lower back to the leg. Learn more about its causes and symptoms here.

Dealing with Sciatica: What to Expect and When to Seek Help

Most of the time sciatica is not too serious and resolves within weeks to months with proper treatment. On rare occasions, sciatica can be caused by something a bit more serious, including things such as, tumours, lumbar spine fractures, and abscess’.

Experiencing Sciatica Symptoms? Here’s When to See a Physiotherapist

You should see your physiotherapist if you are experiencing any symptoms of sciatica as physiotherapists are experts in assessing, diagnosing, and treating sciatica quickly.

You should see a health professional immediately if you are experiencing other symptoms such as:

  • Issues with your bladder or bowel – unable to get to or go to the bathroom.
  • Intense pain down the back of one or both legs.
  • Numbness in the groin/inner thigh region.
  • Weakness in one or both legs.
  • Unexpected weight loss.

These symptoms may be signs of something more serious and you should ensure you get a proper assessment to get a diagnosis.

Do I need to get an MRI or X-ray?

Most of the time you will not need to get scans of any kind. When you are assessed by your physiotherapist they will let you know whether you need to get any scans. Most of the time your scans won’t give you any extra information that will change your physiotherapy treatment.

How is Sciatica Treated?

At the start of treatment, the focus is on easing pain. Here are some effective methods:

  1. Gentle Movement: Slow movements or short walks can reduce stiffness.
  2. Stationary Biking: 5-10 minutes daily can ease pain and aid movement.
  3. Pool Activities: Swimming or walking in water can relieve pressure on the back.
  4. Heat Therapy: Applying a heat pack can soothe tense muscles.
  5. Medication: Consult your doctor for pain-relief options.

Once pain lessens, your physiotherapist will gradually increase your loading through strengthening exercises. These exercises will start off relatively light and easy, and gradually progress to weighted exercises to ensure you are able to do everything you need in life and to make sure that the pain doesn’t come back.
