Concussion: Be Careful with Your Brain

by | 1 Aug 2024

What is a Concussion?

Concussions have become a hot topic over the past decade. The days of athletes getting knocked out and immediately returning to the game are over. Now, players are taken off the field for assessments and might not return, for good reason.

A concussion is a type of brain injury usually caused by a blow to the head or body that temporarily affects brain function. It might involve a loss of consciousness, but often it doesn’t. Instead, it can cause various symptoms like confusion, dizziness, or headaches, even without passing out.

What are the Symptoms of a Concussion?

Concussions can cause a variety of symptoms that might not appear immediately and can last for days, weeks, or even longer.

Common symptoms include:

  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Memory loss (especially forgetting the event that caused the concussion)

Other symptoms include:

  • Dizziness
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Visual disturbances
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Speech difficulties
  • Mood changes
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Fatigue

These symptoms vary from person to person and can affect daily activities. Some of these symptoms are common in other conditions such as neck pain. If you have had an injury to the head and are experiencing these types of symptoms you should see your physiotherapist or other qualified health professional to get an appropriate assessment.

What is Actually Going on in the Brain When you get a Concussion?

We’re going to keep this simple. For a detailed read, check out “What Happens to Your Brain When You Get a Concussion: a Deeper Dive” by Concussion Alliance. They really get into detail, it’s a great read.

First, you should know that the brain’s main energy source is adenosine triphosphate (ATP). You may remember this from high school PDHPE.

When you get concussed, chemical imbalances and cell damage occur. To fix this, your body uses up ATP, but a concussion also makes it harder to produce new ATP. This depletion of ATP means your brain doesn’t function at its best and becomes more vulnerable. Not allowing enough time for ATP to replenish can lead to further and potentially permanent brain injury.

How Long Should You Wait Before Returning to Sport After a Concussion?

If you get a concussed while playing sports, your first questions are likely, “How long until I can play again?” and “Can I return once my symptoms stop?”

After a concussion, it’s crucial to wait until your ATP stores are replenished, which takes at least 22-30 days. Symptoms usually disappear within 7-10 days, this means that you should wait at least 2-3 weeks after being symptom-free before returning to sports.

That’s probably a lot longer than you were thinking. But, this ensures your brain is fully recovered and reduces the risk of further injury. Prioritising brain health is essential.

When Should I See a Physio After Concussion?

You should see a physio, or other health professional whenever you have a concussion, even if you feel like it was only mild. They can assess your condition and determine if you need more specialised care.

What Does Treatment Involve After a Concussion?

After you have been concussed, your physio will give you advice based on your symptoms. The main goal is to avoid triggering any symptoms, which often means you need rest.

You’ll need both mental and physical rest. This means taking a break from physical activity and reducing time on your phone or other devices, as these can overstimulate your brain and worsen symptoms.

Your physio will monitor your symptoms and guide you through the recovery process, ensuring you’re on the right track.

Will I Recover Fully After a Concussion?

Yes, most people fully recover from a concussion. However, it’s crucial to get the right amount of rest and allow yourself the time needed to heal properly. Following your healthcare professional’s advice will help ensure a complete recovery.
